New Technical Paper: Carburetor or Electronic Fuel Injection for UAV Engines?

Fuel preparation has a direct impact on combustion stability, specific fuel consumption, load response, thermal stress and engine service life. For UAV manufacturers and system integrators, the choice between carburetor and EFI is therefore not only a component decision, but an important part of propulsion system design.

What the technical paper covers

The paper explains why diaphragm carburetors remain a robust and reliable solution for many air-cooled two-stroke UAV engines. Their mechanical design requires no sensors, control units or electronic actuators, which can reduce integration effort and support applications where simplicity, low system complexity and operational robustness are key.

It also shows where electronic fuel injection offers advantages. EFI systems use sensor data and map-based control to adjust the fuel-air mixture more precisely across changing operating conditions.  There is no universally superior solution. Carburetors are well suited for UAV platforms with predictable mission profiles, easy maintenance requirements and a focus on robustness. Electronic fuel injection becomes especially relevant for long-range UAVs, BVLOS missions, high-performance platforms, hybrid propulsion systems and military applications with changing environmental conditions.
